Weather Conditions Rocked The Boat!
It was a typical Texas morning with the normal blistering mid 90's plus heat. Then
throw in a gusts of wind to get the boat to be tossed around on the waves will give you
an idea of the fun we were getting into.
Weather conditions can make you and break you on any trip to the outdoors. When it
comes to fishing in the intercoast when the water is stirred up so is the baitfish.
With this excitement in the water we were set to see what was to unfold...
Lets get fishing: Well I have been to the coast
and fished artificials and mullet, this was my first time with croakers so I was
excited to learn a new technique. I can say Ryan didn't let me down his knowledge and
skills as a fisherman and guide are first class. When looking for Croaker make sure they
are health and kicking acording to Capt. Ryan the kicking does two things alerts the fish and
gets them down before the birds get them. The other thing I learned was bring alot of bait, these
fish live in a lower salt content and the salt in the intercoastal is much higher so they only
last about two cast and if you get a strike and lose it your bait is to fatigued to make it.
Rod control is
key to good hookset!
For those of us that grew up setting the hook right away this will be a learning curve but well worth the practice.
When you cast we tried to land the croaker next to the grass beds looking for Speckeled Trout. The key was to keep the
rod tip high and still have a good feel for the croaker on the hook. When you do get a bite drop your rod and
let him run when the slack is run out then set the hook and put on his parking brake. It took me awhile to
get it right but after I did I was bringing in more fish and living life.

The Redfish and Speckeled Trout Bite...
The morning started off better than even ever. No sooner did the line hit the water
and it was fish on. It was undersized and it came in easy but we could put a notch down for the
day and we were not skunked. We were in the Upper Laguna Madre looking for the big
trout because we need three for the stringer turn in and the big trout were in hidding.
Luck would shine and the trout turned to redfish in an instint. We landed some nice red's
as Capt Ryan would tell us "great red's for any tournament".
So we were in search of the trout again and we were finding trout just not the
grandpa size we were hoping for. Remember I mentioned hookset it was at this time I was
not missing the hook like I was in the begining. Before I was pulling when they grabbed the
croaker they didn't comit to it yet so when I was trying to set the hook all I was doing
was playing tug-a-war and lost them when they let go.
Persistance pays off...
Even though the bites still remained small we were landing keepers. You could tell the difference
in sizes as the keepers stayed down long and had more back bone and the undersize liked to ride the
waves like they were water skiing. Then the hard hit came and big fish on was a great sound. You
could tell this was one we were looking for as it dug down and didn't give any
ground as it was being reeled back to the boat, as the net hit the water he changed his mind and
made another run for it. Soon this trout was landed and measured at 25" it was a refreshing sight
to see. After this catch the bite stayed small and it was off to a new location once again.
We stayed on this routine all say and it didn't disappiont us as all day we had a successful
adventure and had a day to remember. The days total weight was wonderfull as we had caught
55.5 lbs of red's and trout, it was a good day fishing.I know you are wondering how the tournament
went and we did great. We came in second over all losing by under 2 lbs and only because a great
trout caught by the first place team that was 33" and 9.75 lbs. what a fish to land. Our team
took the trophy for the largest redfish that was about 7.5 lbs not a large fish for the area but the
best of the day so we will take it. As far as the day goes it was a "Awesome Day Fishing"
and I with out any hesitation recomend Capt. Ryan Waggoner. We look forward to getting with Ryan
and making a DVD about fishing in the area for you to see. We are also looking forward to the other
side of Ryans service started by his father Butch and do some waterfoul hunting in the future.
Thank you Capt. Ryan Waggoner for a great day on the water.
